The table determines by order of ranking the number of teams from each country that will participate in the next season’s Euro Hockey League. The big news to come from this is that Ireland has moved up the table from tenth to seventh place, which means that they will have two representatives in next season’s Euro Hockey League competition. This is partly due to the incredible efforts of Three Rock Rovers, who reached the last 16 of this season’s competition. To see the story in full, click here.
KO16 Hamburg – facts & figuresDid you know that a total of 21 penalty corners were scored in the twelve matches played at the event? Or that HC Bloemendaal was the only team that did not feel the need to refer to the video umpire in their victories over Cannock HC and East Grinstead? We have compiled a list of fascinating facts and figures that examines everything from the number of disciplinary cards issued to the most successful open play goal scorer at KO16 Hamburg. UHC Hamburg triumph in “Das Duell”Following their stunning successes at KO16, reining Euro Hockey League champions UHC Hamburg continued their fine form with a brilliant 4-1 victory over rivals Der Club an der Alster in the German Hockey Liga. The meeting of the two sides - known as "Das Duell" - took place at UHC Hamburg, and also featured a clash between the women of UHC and Alster, with Alster taking a 2-1 win to ensure that the UHC Hamburg would not have all of the glory. Euro Hockey League News - 13th April 2009

Final day drama at KO16 Hamburg

The Euro Hockey League KO16 Hamburg event came to an end today, completing four days of sun, shock results and sensational hockey. The day’s first match saw KHC Leuven of Belgium stun 2003 European Champions Reading with a 2-1 victory. The win and subsequent qualification for the Semi Finals is incredible for a team that many believed would not even make it out of the group stage. Dutch giants Amsterdam H&BC and H.C. Rotterdam went head-to-head in the final match of KO16 Hamburg as the two teams played out the most dramatic match of the weekend, with H.C. Rotterdam winning on penalties. You can find brief reports of the matches below, and extended reports on the Euro Hockey League website – www.ehlhockey.tv.

Quarter Final 3: KHC Leuven 2-1 Reading HC
Belgium's KHC Leuven scored a 66th minute winner to defeat pre-match favourites Reading 2-1 to book their place in the semi-finals of the Euro Hockey League. Patrice Houssein scored a brilliant deflection to finish Reading's European ambitions to set up a Semi Final match against reigning EHL Champions UHC Hamburg at the end of May.

KHC Leuven almost took the lead in the very first minute when striker Pau Quemada got his stick on a cross from the left by Renaud Pangrazio, but the effort flew fractionally wide of the right post. In the eighth minute of the match Reading conceded a penalty corner which was slammed into the net by Quemada to give Leuven a 1-0 lead. The Spaniard had managed to achieve what his countrymen from Polo Barcelona had failed to do on Saturday – beat Reading keeper Nick Brothers. Despite constant second half pressure from Reading, the Leuven defence was performing excellently, keeping their opponent’s goal scoring chances to a minimum. Eventually though, Reading’s pressure resulted in a 47th minute penalty corner, and Great Britain defender Richard Mantell flicked a ferocious effort into the goal via the right post. After being dominated by Reading for much of the last two quarters, KHC Leuven then sprang into life to stun Reading in the final five minutes. Pau Quemada forced a double save from Nick Brothers, before Hugues de Cooman crossed for Patrice Houssein who deflected the ball into the roof of the net to give Leuven a famous victory. For more details click here.

Quarter Final 4: Amsterdam H&BC 3-5 H.C. Rotterdam (A.P.S.)
Amsterdam H&BC were ahead on two occasions but suffered the cruelty of being eliminated on penalties strokes, with H.C. Rotterdam taking the only remaining place in the Semi Finals. A Phil Burrows field goal in the 61st minute tied the scores at 2-2 and the sides could not be separated in extra time to guarantee a dramatic penalty shootout. Amsterdam's Santi Freixa was the player to miss the vital penalty - a cruel blow to a player who was arguably the game’s most outstanding player. The result means that H.C. Rotterdam will face compatriots HC Bloemendaal in the semi-finals of the Euro Hockey League at the end of May.

Amsterdam took an early lead through Teun Rohof, who deflected a cleverly aimed pass from penalty corner expert Taeke Taekema into the roof of the goal. H.C. Rotterdam got themselves back in the game with a penalty corner of their own, but like the earlier effort scored by Amsterdam, it came from an unexpected source. Sohail Abbas stepped over the ball as Rotterdam used a different routine, and Mauritz Hertzberger put the ball into the top of the net from close range. However, Amsterdam’s irresistible Spaniard Santi Friexa produced a moment of brilliance when he beat three players from the right before hitting the ball into the goal with his reverse stick. Amsterdam were clearly the dominant force and it seemed as if they would be the team heading to the semi finals, but Rotterdam’s Phil Burrows changed the flow of the match when he equalised with nine minutes remaining. With no goals in extra time, it came down to penalties. Jeroen Hertzberger of H.C. Rotterdam made no mistake with his effort, but Amsterdam's Santi Freixa had his shot well blocked by keeper Permin Blaak to give Rotterdam the edge. Rotterdam’s Phil Burrows made the score 4-2 before Amsterdam's Valentin Verga scored to keep his side in the match. However, the Rotterdam players were just one goal away from reaching the semi finals. Waseem Ahmad attempted to dribble past goalkeeper Klaas Veering, but was tripped and a penalty goal was awarded to give H.C. Rotterdam second successive appearance in the Euro Hockey League Semi Finals. For more details click here.

EHL: We cannot under-estimate Alster, says Egara’s Schickendantz
Euro Hockey League top goal-scorer Guillermo Schickendantz has told the EHL that Club Egara need to be prepared to face a very different Club an der Alster team in Round 2 to the side they crushed 4-0 in Round 1. “I think it will be a very different match”, the Argentinean told the EHL website. “Everything will be different and it will help them that they play in Germany. It will be a big mistake if we think about the 1st Round result.”

EHL & UHC Hamburg announce KO16 player party!
The players at EHL KO16 may have serious hockey matters to attend to, but Euro Hockey League & UHC Hamburg has given them the chance to let off steam with their fans and supporters at the Official Players Night. The event will take place on Easter Sunday (April 12th) at Cafe Keese in Hamburg’s famous Reeperbahn district. The party will begin at 10.30pm and is for adults only, with a cost of entry set at 10€ (8€ if purchased in advance).

NETHERLANDS: Bloemendaal "preparations going well", says coach Caldas
HC Bloemendaal coach Max Caldas has stated to the Euro Hockey League that his team has no injury concerns ahead of KO16 Hamburg and that team preparations are going “very well”. However, he admits that he may be without teenage sensation Rik van Kan, the 16-year-old who recently scored his first goal in the Hoofdklasse. “Rik might be going to Valencia to play for the Dutch U-18’s in a Four Nations tournament, but we shall see”, said Caldas.

ENGLAND: Grinstead take title while Cannock fail in EHL qualifying bid
East Grinstead were crowned Slazenger England Hockey League Champions for the first time in their history at the weekend thanks to a brilliant 5-3 away win at Surbiton. Germany international Martin Häner scored twice in the all-important victory, completing a remarkable double for East Grinstead who also claimed the national indoor title earlier in the year. Reading HC and Cannock went head to head to decide the one remaining Euro Hockey League place, with Reading taking a 5-0 victory to guarantee their participation in next season’s EHL.

BELGIUM: Waterloo Ducks re-discover their form
VW Hockey League Champions Waterloo Ducks have had a tough few weeks, but re-discovered their form with an 8-3 victory over Heracles. It is good news for the Ducks ahead of their EHL KO16 match against Amsterdam H&BC, as they will need to be at their best to defeat the Dutch high-flyers. KHC Leuven have been in good form of late and currently sit second in the league, but their 4-3 home victory over league strugglers Orée may worry some of their supporters in the build up to their match against Ireland’s Three Rock Rovers.

SPAIN: RC Polo & Egara looking good ahead of KO16
Spain’s remaining EHL contenders RC de Polo de Barcelona and Club Egara are currently second and third in the Princess Hockey Liga, with both teams having lost just once all season. At the weekend, RC Polo defeated league leaders Atlétic Terrassa 3-1, confirming that they are in fine form, whilst Club Egara moved level on points with Atlétic and Polo by crushing Real Club Jolaseta 8-1. Egara’s result was even more remarkable considering that they were without Europe’s most in form striker Guillermo Schickendantz, who was in Argentina for his sister’s wedding.

FRANCE: Unbeaten St Germain boost goal difference
St Germain are still unbeaten this season and sit second in the league, just one point behind Montrouge with a game in hand. A 3-0 away win at St Francais was achieved at the weekend, boosting their already excellent goal difference. They have conceded just twelve times in their ten matches, suggesting that English champions and KO16 opponents East Grinstead may have a tough time breaking through their rock solid defence.
